Historic photos from Alameda.
These archival photos document the construction of Naval Air Station Alameda. They show early buildings, the construction of the breakwater, and the filling of surrounding lagoons. The station was built on a foundation of dredged material, with roughly half of the base created from landfill taken from the estuary. Beneath many areas of the site are concrete “bones”—concrete runners designed to stabilize the soil and sand and prevent settling.
