Clifton Wainwright was born on Sept. 6, 1931, to the union of Mitchell and Harriet Toles Wainwright in Rosedale, LA. After the death of her husband, Harriet met and married Joseph Landry who moved the family to Oakland, CA.
Clifton accepted Christ at an early age and was baptized at Rose Hill Baptist Church in Rosedale, LA. After moving to Oakland, he held membership in New Hope, Havenscourt and Allen Temple Baptist churches. He enjoyed the television ministry of Dr. Fred Price for many, many years.
lifton graduated from McClymonds High School where he excelled in academics and athletics. He was the first black All City quarterback and the first black Oakland Tribune “Athlete of the Year.” While at McClymonds, he met and married his high school sweetheart, Mylease Caddett. To this union were born five children: Clifford, Michelle, Mitchell, Mark and Clayton.
Clifton received his Associate of Arts degree from Santa Rosa Junior College. He briefly worked at Berkeley Steel in Berkeley, CA and later was employed at Alameda Naval Air Station as a Program Manager and a Flight Test Engineer.
He was also a member of the California Board of Realtors where he served two terms as state president, and two terms as a national president. He continued as a realtor for more than fifty years where he became an ICON.
Throughout his life, Clifton enjoyed traveling, sports activities, chess and most importantly, all relatives and friends. He will be sorely missed by all as he was noted for his great sense of humor.
He leaves to mourn his ex-wife, Mylease; one daughter, Michelle Wainwright (Dr. James) Bailey; four sons: Clifford Wainwright, DDS; Mitchell (Cecelia) Wanwright; MD; Mark Wainwright; and Clayton (Imelda) Wainwright, DDS; eleven grandchildren: Stanley Kelley, Camille Wainwright, MD, Cheryl Wainwright, MD, James Bailey, Nicole Wainwright, Jeffrey Wainwright, Marsha Wainwright, Robert Wainwright, Matthew Wainwright, Mark Clifton Wainwright, and Jennifer Wainwright; one brother-in-law, Wallace Haynes, Sr., and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and in-laws. He was preceded in death by his parents Mitchell Wainwright, Harriet and Joseph Landry; his sister, Anna M. Haynes; and his brother, Plandres “Joe” Wainwright.
Clifton quietly departed this life on Dec. 21, 2011. May he rest in peace!
