Jem S. Louie was born in China and grew up in Sacramento. He joined the Army as a young man, serving in Germany, where he developed his taste for German food. Settling in the Bay Area after his service, he married. He and Donna had two sons, Ken and Jeff.

Jem spent his Navy civilian career at Naval Air Station Alameda (Naval Air Rework Facility/ Naval Aviation Depot), where he completed a four year apprenticeship program in aircraft electronics, becoming a Journeyman Electronics Mechanic in the Avionics Division and later an Electronics Technician in the Engineering Department. Jem was good at puzzle-solving (as evidenced by those crossword puzzles) and he was an accomplished electronics mechanic.

Jem liked a range of music – except for country/ western – and attended many concerts with his friends. An excellent photographer until his eyesight failed, Jem was proudest of the photos he took of his two grandchildren. And what a cook – Jem could always be counted on for a tasty lasagna. He had a wide range of interests. Rarely did Jem say no when asked to a movie/ meal/ walk/ play/ concert/party/ museum.

Jem was a quiet man. Those of us who were able to hear his soft voice are grateful for his challenging conversations and wry observations.
