My brother, Wayne Cummings, AOM2, flew out of Alameda Naval Air Station in 1944. He was a turret gunner in an Avenger Torpedo plane. His plane went down in San Francisco Bay, according to the only obituary I could locate it was 23 miles off the coast. He and his two crew members were killed when they were on a training flight and went into a practice bombing dive and did not come out of the dive. I do not recall the names of the other two members, I think one was McKenzie, but I’m not sure. My brother’s body was the only one recovered as far as I know. This would have happened May 22-24 of 1944.
